[Text] Vladikavkaz March 15 TASS--Following several days
of relative calm, the situation in South Ossetia became
aggravated again. Last night, residential areas of Tskhinvali
and checkpoints of Interior Ministry troops were fired upon
from three directions for several hours from large-caliber
machine-guns, grenade launchers, automatic weapons and sniper
rifles.

Fire was conducted by militants from among former Georgian
president Zviad Gamsakhurdia's supporters who are in the nearby
villages of Nikozi, Tamarasheni, and Ergneti. There were no
immediate reports about casualties.

Ossetian self-defence detachments returned the fire to
neutralise attackers' weapon emplacements. According to Oleg
Teziyev, commander of the armed forces of the South Ossetian
Republic, the latest bandit action by Georgian militants was
aimed at hindering positive processes that have begun to emerge
in the sociopolitical situation in the republic and at
frustrating contemplated talks between the Ossetian side and
plenipotentiary representatives of Georgia.
